Days of Jewish Culture 2020
Opening: Saturday, 29 February, 7.30 pm, Schauspielhaus Chemnitz
The 29th Days of Jewish Culture in Chemnitz will take place from 29 February to 15 March under the patronage of Mayor Barbara Ludwig. The festival will open at 7.30 pm at Schauspielhaus Chemnitz with "Koyaanisqatsi" - an intergenerational theatre production by the Fritz Theater. This will be followed by the musical-lyrical programme "Tehorah" by singer Adrienne Haan at 9 pm. Free tickets for the opening are available at all theatre advance booking offices. Tickets are limited to two per person.
The Jewish Culture Days in Chemnitz combine a variety of themes in different genres, including theatre performances, concerts, lectures, talks, discussions, readings, films as well as guided tours of the Jewish cemetery and the Jewish community centre.
They have been taking place in Chemnitz since 1991. They were initiated by the pastor of the Pauli Cross parish, Mathias Wild, who died in 2004. He made it his life's work to make the festival an integral part of Chemnitz's cultural and intellectual life. The cultural festival is organised by the association Tage der jüdischen Kultur in Chemnitz e.V. in cooperation with the Jewish Community, the Evangelical Forum Chemnitz and the FUER CHEMNITZ e.V. civic association. With their cultural, social and religious orientation, the "Days of Jewish Culture" promote tolerance towards other cultures and ways of life.
In addition, events about the crimes committed against the Jews in Europe in the 20th century are also an important theme of the "Days of Jewish Culture" that have an impact on society. The cultural days, which take place at various venues, also involve more than three dozen co-operation partners.
