Days of Jewish Culture
Opening: Saturday, 9 March, 7.30 pm, Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz
The 28th Days of Jewish Culture (TdjK) in Chemnitz begin on Saturday, 9 March. The programme until 24 March 2019 includes around 70 events. Mayor Miko Runkel will open the traditional festival together with the Prime Minister of Saxony, Michael Kretschmer, at 7.30 pm in the Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz, Theaterstraße.
The theme of this year's Days of Jewish Culture is "Home - place of longing - place of despair". The opening of the Days of Jewish Culture also marks the start of the exhibition "Max Liebermann - Drawings and Prints" in the art collections.
Max Liebermann (1847 - 1935) is today regarded as one of the outstanding protagonists of German Impressionism and a pioneer of artistic modernism. From 9 March to 10 July 2019, the Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz will be showing an exhibition of Liebermann's work. Three drawings, 68 etchings and lithographs as well as four books with original prints by Liebermann can be found in the Graphic Art Collection of the Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz. With this exhibition, which is being held on the occasion of the Days of Jewish Culture in Chemnitz, the Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz are showing a representative selection of their extensive holdings of Liebermann prints for the first time.
Born in Berlin in 1847 as the son of a wealthy textile manufacturer, Liebermann was a typical representative of the assimilated Jewish Prussian bourgeoisie and died embittered and ostracised by the National Socialists in 1935. His oeuvre of prints comprises just over 500 etchings and lithographs.
Two families from Israel are expected to attend the opening of the Days of Jewish Culture as guests of the City of Chemnitz. They are the grandchildren of Max Geller and Paula Margarete Geller (née Götz). Both were Jews from Chemnitz and had to flee to Palestine in 1935 due to persecution by the Nazi regime. Their three children were born in Chemnitz.
