Daycare centre "Zwergenhaus" Neukirchner Straße 7a will be reopened on 6 October - 1.7 million investment completed
Complete refurbishment of the day-care centre built in 1960, extension with multi-purpose room and barrier-free accessibility ensure its continued existence in the long term
The city of Chemnitz has invested 1.7 million euros in the now completed extensive construction project for the complete renovation of the municipal daycare centre at Neukirchner Straße 7a and the new extension; the considerable sum includes almost 141,000 euros in federal funding. The big relocation day for the children and the daycare team headed by Kerstin Hartmann from the interim premises in Max-Türpe-Straße back to the completely renovated "Zwergenhaus" Neukirchner Straße 7a, which has been extended with an extension, is scheduled for Thursday, 2 October. After the public holiday weekend on Monday, 6 October, 83 children and 12 teachers will start their daily routine here. Of course, the move back into the old-new "Zwergenhaus" will also be celebrated: as soon as the children have settled in properly, the successful completion of the building work will be celebrated with a party for children, parents and the daycare centre team and all those involved in the million-euro project at the beginning of December and an open day will be organised.
The municipal daycare centre "Zwergenhaus" Neukirchner Straße 7a in the Stelzendorf district of Chemnitz is part of the city's medium-term daycare centre requirements plan as a facility to be continued in the long term. The prerequisite for this was the complete refurbishment of the building, which was constructed in 1960 and is a single-storey functional building with a pitched roof. Painting and flooring work had previously been carried out here to maintain its value, the two washrooms and the staff WC had been renovated and measures to implement structural fire protection had been realised. With the complete refurbishment, including the extension that was built at the same time, based on the city council resolution passed in spring 2013, the Neukirchner Straße daycare centre now fulfils all the necessary requirements for a modern daycare facility and also ensures the expansion of capacity from 74 to 92 kindergarten places in the future. Construction began in August 2013 and the 1.7 million euro building project was realised by the City of Chemnitz/Building Management and Structural Engineering Department. The planning office Katja Billep Planungsteam from Chemnitz was commissioned with the planning and construction supervision.

In order to increase the capacity of the facility as planned, the daycare centre was given a two-storey extension on the north-east side as part of the construction work, which is connected to the old building via a single-storey connecting corridor. The upper floor of the extension houses two group rooms and associated ancillary rooms, while the basement houses a craft room, music room and staff room as well as functional and storage rooms. This means that one group can now move from the old building into the new building. The group room thus freed up will then be used as a multi-purpose room for all groups. As part of the construction work, all functional rooms were fitted with underfloor heating and vinyl flooring, while the sanitary facilities and corridors were fitted with floor tiles.
Barrier-free access for the daycare centre was largely implemented during the renovation of the old building and the new extension. Fire protection, safety, thermal and sound insulation requirements were incorporated into the entire construction project in line with modern standards. For the first time in a day care centre, a wood chip heating system is being used for heating and hot water preparation, which contributes to a significant reduction in CO² emissions and a reduction in energy costs.
