Daycare centre strike on Friday: 52 of the 69 municipal facilities affected
Emergency care secured in 17 alternative buildings - parents comprehensively informed
The service trade union Verdi announced the results of its ballot today and initially announced a nationwide strike by childcare workers in Chemnitz on Friday. Of the 69 municipal day-care centres, 52 will remain closed, 17 are available as alternative facilities. These include three daycare centres, one daycare centre with curative education groups and 12 after-school care centres.
All parents were informed of the impending strike at the beginning of the week via notices in the daycare centres and have now been informed again following the results of the ballot on the strike day on 8 May 2015.
All parents were spoken to in the daycare centres. Parents who have to make use of emergency childcare due to their particular professional and family situation have been informed individually which daycare centre is available for childcare on Friday. For these few exceptions, emergency childcare can be provided by non-striking staff.
According to the feedback received, 27 children across the city will take advantage of this offer, which is 0.6 per cent of children. Between 180 and 250 children were registered in the after-school care centres, around 6 percent of the children registered.
The strike affects 4572 children in municipal daycare centres and 4155 children in municipal after-school care centres. There are currently 805 managers and educators employed in municipal daycare centres and after-school care centres, of which 665 are expected to take part in the strike. 75 employees are on duty to provide emergency care.
