Day-care centres at Reichenhainer Straße 33a to be retained
Free State of Saxony and City of Chemnitz reach agreement
The two daycare centres "Zwergenland" and "Krabbelkäfer" at Reichenhainer Straße 33a can continue to operate. The Saxon Real Estate and Construction Management (Staatsbetrieb Sächsisches Immobilien- und Baumanagement, Geschäftsbereich Zentrales Flächenmanagement Sachsen (ZFM)) and the City of Chemnitz have agreed on a new open-ended lease for the two daycare centres at the site.
Mayor Dagmar Ruscheinsky: "I am pleased and grateful that ZFM has accommodated us and that the two facilities will continue to exist in the coming years. Due to the proximity to the Technical University and many companies in the neighbourhood, closing the busy facilities would have been challenging, especially for the children and their parents."
The closure of the centres, which has been discussed in recent weeks, is linked to the continuing decline in the number of births in Chemnitz. The youth welfare office anticipates that around 1,000 daycare places will be unfilled over the next two years.
Against this backdrop, the City of Chemnitz is proposing to the City Council that further childcare places be reduced by 2028 at the latest or that several facilities no longer be operated. The closure of facilities to replace Reichenhainer Straße 33a will not be considered.
