David Storl with European Championship gold in Zurich
Chemnitz keeps the competition at bay in dominant fashion
With a distance of 21.41 m in his first attempt, David Storl secured his second gold medal at a European Championships after 2012 in Helsinki. The 24-year-old exceptional athlete relegated his rivals Borja Vivas from Spain (20.86) and Tomasz Majewski from Poland (20.83) to second and third place.
"David Storl lived up to his role as favourite with an impressive performance and despite physical complaints. Many people from Chemnitz and myself were very impressed. I hope that his goal of breaking the 22 metre barrier will not be long in coming. He has already proven many times this year that there is not much more to it," said Mayor Barbara Ludwig on the Chemnitz native's success yesterday.
Despite back pain during the training camp in Kienbaum and the onset of knee problems during the competition in Zurich, Storl left no doubt as to who is master in the ring. The competition did not even manage to get close to the winning distance of 21.41 metres.
