Cycling education in schools

Joint painting campaign by the Chemnitz Police Department, the City of Chemnitz and the "RADerFAHREN" project of Chemnitz University of Technology for the design of the entrance area in the new traffic training centre in Chemnitz

For many primary school pupils, especially those in Years 3 and 4, the start of the new school year on Monday 21 August also marks the start of preparation for the school's cycling education in subject lessons. The practical part of road safety education has been taking place in the new traffic training centre at Konradstraße 7 in Chemnitz since the beginning of 2023.

The Chemnitz Police Department - Prevention Service, the City of Chemnitz (Education Department, Building Management and Structural Engineering and the Children and Youth Officer) and the "RADerFAHREN" project of Chemnitz University of Technology(https://www.tu-chemnitz.de/wirtschaft/bwl8/raderfahren.php) are calling for a joint painting campaign:

Interested teachers are cordially invited to create various pictures with their pupils on the subject of "Safe, active and environmentally conscious cycling in road traffic and during leisure time". These small works of art are then to be displayed in a kind of "shop window exhibition" in showcases in the entrance area of the traffic training centre in order to decorate the currently still white walls in the entrance area of the centre.

The campaign is primarily aimed at pupils in the 3rd and 4th grades in science lessons. Pupils in other grades are also welcome to create "radactive works of art". Depending on the chosen thematic focus and time frame, this painting activity is a good introduction to the theoretical part of road safety education at school, for example. It should help to teach the role of bicycles and safe cycling in the context of more sustainable urban mobility across and between subjects (e.g. science lessons, art, handicrafts). In addition to imparting knowledge and skills, the painting campaign is also intended to give the children a positive impetus for the subsequent practical part of their cycling training.

To take part in the campaign, interested schools, teachers, parents and children can register by 15 September 2023 at the latest with Dr Katja Beyer, research assistant in the "RADerFAHREN" project (Tel. 0371 531 32360 or by email to katja.beyer(at)wiwi.tu-chemnitz.de).

When registering, please provide the relevant contact details so that further details about the painting campaign can then be agreed with the respective schools or teachers and the time window for submitting the artworks. An information letter on the painting campaign and two painting templates can also be downloaded from the "Schulportal Sachsen".
