Cycle Europe - European youth networking project
4,800 km long bicycle tour through seven European twin cities of Chemnitz - discussion evening and international dinner on 10 May, 4 pm, at Luxor
To mark World Twin Cities Day last Sunday, the City of Chemnitz is providing information about an extraordinary project to connect its twin cities: Cycle Europe.
Since 1 March and until the end of June 2024, two young women from Chemnitz have been cycling around 4,800 km through Chemnitz's seven European twin cities as ambassadors for their home town. Starting in Manchester (UK), Rosa-Nora Nebel and Charlotte Bohley will cycle via Düsseldorf, Mulhouse (France), Ljubljana (Slovenia), Ústí nad Labem (Czech Republic) and Łódź (Poland) to Tampere (Finland).
On the one hand, the aim is to promote Chemnitz as European Capital of Culture 2025. On the other hand, it is about long-term networking between the partner municipalities in the field of youth and youth work. A video documentary (Instagram: @cycl_europe) and interviews in all cities will capture the lives of young people and the work and current projects of local youth centres. The aim is to incentivise young people from the partner cities to engage in exchange and to encourage them to discover Europe and its possibilities (for themselves).
The project partner is the extracurricular youth education department of the AJZ e. V. The Alternative Jugendzentrum e. V. has many years of experience in organising international youth and specialist measures.
The Cycle Europe project is funded by the Youth Welfare Office - International Youth Work - and the European and International Relations/City Partnerships Department of the City of Chemnitz.
Discussion evening and international dinner
On 10 May at 4 p.m., interested parties are invited to a discussion evening entitled "Brückenbauer Europas. Panel discussion on 20 years of EU enlargement to the east" at Luxor, Hartmannstraße 11. There will be an opportunity to find out more about the current Cycle Europe project, international youth work and Chemnitz's twin cities at this event and at the international dinner to follow.
The World Day of Twin Cities was launched in 1963 by the World Federation of United Cities to emphasise the importance of town twinning for exchange and cooperation on a cultural, social, economic and technological level. These partnerships promote understanding and tolerance towards others, they strengthen peace and democracy. World Twin Cities Day is celebrated every year on the last Sunday in April. This year on 28 April.
