Current status of the Gablenz indoor swimming pool
Early measures avoid another lockdown
Contrary to media reports to the contrary, the Gablenz indoor swimming pool will not be more expensive than planned. In order to optimise planning and construction services and avoid further closures, the renovation of the changing area originally planned for 2019 will be brought forward to the current year. Funds totalling around 400,000 euros are required for this and will be used by the end of the year.
In order to avoid unnecessary multiple closures of the indoor swimming pool and to minimise restrictions on use for schools, clubs and the public, the two major construction phases of the extensive refurbishment have already been combined since summer 2016.
The first phase includes the renewal of the ventilation systems as well as the electrical and measurement control technology, the implementation of the fire protection concept and preparatory work for the renewal of the water technology. This section is being funded by the Sächsische Aufbaubank (SAB), "Stadtumbau Ost Chemnitz" funding programme, with around 532,000 euros.
The second phase mainly comprises the energy-efficient renovation of the façade and roof, the renovation of the entire pool water technology including the renewal of the swimming pools and the partial renovation of the ground floor of the indoor swimming pool without the changing area. This second phase is also being subsidised by the SAB with up to 1,005,000 euros.
The construction work inside the indoor swimming pool is due to be completed by the end of 2017. This will be followed by a trial run and the operator and legal approvals. The indoor swimming pool should be available to users again at the end of the 2018 winter holidays. Occupancy after completion of the refurbishment will be agreed between the school and sports department and the users by mid-December.
School and club swimming during the construction-related closure of the indoor swimming pool will be organised in coordination with the Saxon Education Agency and the clubs in the "Am Südring" indoor swimming pool as well as in the municipal swimming pool and the indoor swimming pool in the Sportforum.
