Current road construction measures in Chemnitz

Major road construction projects are currently underway in Chemnitz. Some of these will be completed in the coming weeks. The major roadworks are

Chemnitz model

Construction work is currently underway on Bernsdorfer Straße/Reitbahnstraße for the Chemnitz Model. Work is also in full swing on Reichenhainer Straße/Turnstraße/Stadlerplatz and on the future railway line between Reichenhainer Straße and Fraunhoferstraße. The costs for these three measures total 23.3 million euros. The city will bear 2.4 million euros of this, including subsidies. Construction is scheduled to end at the end of 2016.

Extension of Fraunhofer Strasse to Werner-Seelenbinder-Strasse

The extension of Fraunhoferstraße is part of the city's transport development plan. The project will create a continuous link from Fraunhoferstraße (formerly Güterbahnhofstraße) via Reichenhainer Straße and Werner-Seelenbinder-Straße to Südring and the A72 motorway. The extended Fraunhoferstraße takes over the connecting functions of Reichenhainer Straße and relieves it of motor vehicle traffic, which is an essential basis for the implementation and operation of the Chemnitz model in Reichenhainer Straße.
This will also create direct connections to the main transport network for the planned development areas of the Technology Campus. The costs here amount to 4.5 million euros. The city is contributing 3.3 million euros, including subsidies. Construction is scheduled to end in May 2017.

Reichenhainer Straße/Südbahnhof roundabout

From 11 July 2016 until May 2017, a roundabout will be built at Südbahnhof. The existing Altchemnitzer Str./Reichenhainer Str. junction, which is controlled by a traffic light system, will be replaced by a roundabout in future. Fraunhoferstrasse and Elsässer Strasse will be connected to this roundabout. The future connection between Reichenhainer Straße and Südring will then run via Fraunhoferstraße, Werner- Seelenbinder-Straße and F.-O.-Schimmel-Straße. The costs will total 2.2 million euros. The city is contributing one million euros, including subsidies.

Motorway feeder road Kalkstraße to Oberfrohnaer Straße

Work on the continuation of the Kalkstraße motorway feeder road from the Chemnitz-Rottluff junction to Oberfrohnaer Straße should be completed by October 2016. The road connection to Oberfrohnaer Straße will provide a direct link from Rabenstein to the A72 motorway and thus relieve the road connections via the district of Rottluff. The extension of the motorway feeder road will create an additional supra-regional link to the inner-city road network. The costs amount to 2.7 million euros.

Development of the Rottluff-West industrial estate

In order to provide additional attractive commercial space in the city, construction work on the development of the Rottluff-West industrial estate began in October 2015 and is due to be completed in November 2016. This involves the areas between Rottluffer Straße and Kalkstraße on the site of the former nursery. Thanks to its location directly next to the Rottluff/Rabenstein motorway junction and Kalkstraße, the site has excellent connections to the national and urban transport network. The industrial estate is connected to Kalkstraße by a spur road with a turning circle. All necessary media such as wastewater, rainwater, drinking water, gas, energy supply, communications and city lighting were laid in the approximately 300 metre long access road in coordination with the utility companies. With the development of the Rottluff-West industrial estate, commercial space will be available in a convenient location from the end of 2016. The construction volume of the project is around 1.3 million euros. The project is being funded by the federal and state governments to the tune of 85 per cent as part of the joint task "Improvement of the regional economic structure".

Hofer Straße/Mittelbach

Road renovations on Hofer Straße in the Mittelbach district have been underway since September 2015. After Hofer Straße from Pflockenstraße to Grünaer Straße was continuously renovated and expanded as part of the sewage system development, the continuation to the entrance to Chemnitz in Reichenbrand will be completed in October 2016. The asphalt structure of the road was renewed and the footpath was modified or extended to ensure a continuous one-sided footpath. In the section from Aktienstraße to the end of the village, the Saxon cycle traffic concept was implemented (connection Neefestraße -Aktienstraße-Dorfstraße) by creating a protective cycle lane in Hofer Straße. Furthermore, the road drainage systems were renewed and supplemented and the existing bus stops were converted to make them barrier-free. The costs totalled 700,000 euros, which were borne by the city.

Stelzendorfer Strasse

Since September last year, civil engineering work has been underway on Stelzendorfer Straße between Zwickauerstraße and Nauwerckstraße, which is due to be completed in October 2016. These include the new pipework for the Stelzendorfer Bach stream, the renewal of the combined sewerage system including a new rainwater overflow structure, the laying of new gas and drinking water pipes and the subsequent road construction. The construction costs of the project amount to 1.5 million euros. The city will bear 900,000 euros of this.

Eibenberger Strasse

In Eibenberger Straße, a fundamental road extension with a sewage system development and the renewal of the media will take place in the period from December 2014 to August 2016. The total costs amount to 1.6 million euros. The city's share amounts to 900,000 euros.

Noise barrier Südring (Bahnstraße)

New noise barriers are being erected on the Südring from Neefestraße in the direction of Zwickauer Straße. They will be realised up to Bahnstraße with heights of up to 5.50 m as a highly absorbent wall. The new wall length is 209.00 metres.
The work was completed in July 2016. The costs of the subsidised measure amount to 400,000 euros

Wittgensdorfer Straße

Wittgensdorfer Straße will be renewed between Auerswalder Straße and Paul-Fischer-Weg by August 2017. In addition, the drinking water, gas and wastewater systems on this section are to be renewed. The total costs amount to 1.3 million euros. Of this, 480,000 euros will be spent on road construction, which will be borne by the city. From next week until the beginning of December, the section between Auerswalder Straße and the access road to Borna primary school will be fully closed. From March 2017, work will then be carried out on the remaining section between the primary school and Paul-Fischer-Weg with a full road closure until the beginning of August 2017.
