Culture Committee decides to support investments for cultural institutions

24 projects applied for funding totalling 400,000 euros

At its public meeting yesterday, Thursday, the Culture Committee approved the allocation of around 400,000 euros for investment measures at cultural institutions. The decision provides for all 24 submitted projects to be funded in accordance with the application.

For example, two computer workstations with readers will be set up in the city archives so that citizens can consult historical archive material. In the opera house and theatre, the worn-out spotlight technology can be replaced with investment funds and the Chemnitz Art Collections can count on new event seating and structural improvements, e.g. to the conservation conditions in the collections area.

The measures in the area of independent culture were a particular focus:
For example, the popular Küchwaldbühne theatre will receive a new fence system as well as a small stage house for artists to change in, who previously had to make do with a tent for this purpose. In the Museum of Saxon Vehicles, outdated PC and data technology can be replaced and the flooring in the Klinke e. V. event centre will be renewed. Courtyard lighting can be installed in the off-stage complex on the Sonnenberg. At the LOKOMOV, all the window panes will be replaced and the sound and projection technology improved. In the German Games Museum, the games room on the ground floor can be completely refurbished to enable long gaming sessions and an attractive selection of games. The funding will also enable the "Schlingel" International Film Festival to realise further opportunities for visual presence in the city.

In total, independent culture will receive funding totalling 226,168 euros. This corresponds to approx. 57% of the total funding from the state.

Background to the "investment reinforcement funds" funding opportunity:
With the resolution of the 2017/2018 bi-annual budget, the state government is providing investment reinforcement funds totalling 3 million euros per year for investments in cultural institutions in Saxony. According to a legally stipulated distribution key, the Chemnitz urban cultural area will receive a share of 399,900 euros per year.

The funds are earmarked and intended for reducing the renovation and investment backlog in the cultural sector. Both municipal institutions and independent cultural organisations are to benefit from the state funds.
