Corporations - Facts and figures about the agricultural and food industry
Lecture and discussion on 7 March, 7 p.m. at the Chemnitz Environmental Centre
On Tuesday, 7 March at 7 p.m., there will be a lecture followed by a discussion on the topic: Corporations - facts and figures about the agricultural and food industry at the Chemnitz Environmental Centre, Henriettenstraße 5.
The speaker will be Dr David Greve. He has been the regional director of the Bund für Umwelt und Naturschutz (BUND) Sachsen since 2013. Admission is free.
Background:
Fields, animals and meadows - the images on food packaging are reminiscent of rural agriculture, traditional craftsmanship and unspoilt nature. Many people know that these images often have absolutely nothing to do with today's agriculture and industrial food production, and yet our food is emotionally inextricably linked with these images - and not with the reality and practice of global corporations.
Many people do not realise that large parts of the food sector are divided up between a few corporations. And the trend towards concentration of power continues. In the countries of the South, the middle class is growing and consumption and eating habits are changing as a result. It seems certain that the demand for processed food will increase worldwide.
Citizens must have a say in food policy. More and more people are organising themselves and buying in such a way that diversity can be restored along the value chain. However, this is not enough to end hunger and poverty and protect the environment worldwide. The withdrawal of politics from the economy is an important reason for today's colossal climate and environmental damage and for global injustice. It is high time for a socio-ecologically orientated political regulation of the agricultural and food industry.
