Coordinated expansion of three road sections around Lessingplatz
On Monday, 17 September, extensive construction work will begin on the fundamental expansion of Lessingplatz between Lessingstraße and Sebastian-Bach-Straße, the renewal of the existing combined sewers and the replacement of the drinking water pipe. This project is a coordinated construction project involving the City of Chemnitz's Civil Engineering Department, the City of Chemnitz's waste disposal company and the utility company eins. The construction work is scheduled for completion at the end of May 2019.
The City of Chemnitz's civil engineering department is planning to fundamentally expand Lessingplatz between Lessingstraße and Sebastian-Bach-Straße, including all junctions, reorganise the public parking spaces and restore the pavement along the development. Taking into account the requirements of motorised traffic, cycle and pedestrian traffic and stationary traffic, the existing structural deficits will be eliminated and road safety improved.
The combined sewers on Lessingplatz between Lessingstraße and Sebastian-Bach-Straße, including the associated house connection sewers, will be renewed by the waste disposal company of the City of Chemnitz using the open construction method. The respective connections of the Sebastian-Bach-Straße and Tschaikowskistraße sewers to the Lessingplatz sewer will be rehabilitated using the closed construction method using pipe lining. For the combined sewer in Uhlandstraße, only selective renovation is planned in the area of the joints. The house connection sewers in the streets leading into the sewer will also be rehabilitated using pipe liners. The pipe liner will be inserted via head holes in the pavement areas (each with a start and finish pit of approx. one square metre).
The utility company eins is planning to re-lay the drinking water pipe on Lessingplatz between the junction of Lessingstraße and Sebastian-Bach-Straße and in Tschaikowskistraße as far as the junction of Humboldstraße. In the Lessingplatz area, all existing house service lines must be connected to the newly laid supply line. In Tschaikowskistraße, some of the service pipes will be re-laid and some will be re-tied.
Lessingplatz will have to be fully closed to traffic in sections from Monday; appropriate diversions will be signposted. Access to the houses will be secured during the construction work.
The total construction costs amount to approx. 1.6 million euros. The road construction in the "Chemnitz-Sonnenberg" redevelopment area is being financed by urban development funds from the federal government and the Free State of Saxony as well as the City of Chemnitz's own funds.
The company Krause & Co. Hoch-, Tief- und Anlagenbau GmbH from Neukirchen has been commissioned to carry out the construction work.
The extension of the streets at Lessingplatz between Lessingstraße and Reinhardtstraße as well as Lessingstraße between Lessingplatz and Hainstraße is planned as a follow-up measure in 2020.
