Coordinated expansion of Lessingstrasse and northern section of Lessingplatz - early start of construction work
From today, 2 March, extensive construction work will begin ahead of schedule on the fundamental expansion of Lessingstraße between Hainstraße and Lessingplatz as well as Lessingplatz between Lessingstraße and Reinhardtstraße, during which the existing combined sewers will also be renewed. This project is a coordinated construction project between the City of Chemnitz's Civil Engineering Department and the City of Chemnitz's waste disposal company. The construction work is scheduled for completion at the beginning of September 2020.
The City of Chemnitz's Civil Engineering Department will be fundamentally upgrading Lessingstraße, Lessingplatz between Lessingstraße and Reinhardtstraße, including the junction with Sophienstraße, reorganising the public parking spaces and restoring the pavements on Lessingstraße and between Sophienstraße and Reinhardtstraße. On one side of Lessingstrasse, 16 new trees will be planted. The neighbouring bus stop on Hainstraße will be moved and extended in front of the buildings at Hainstraße 94 and 96.
The combined sewers on Lessingstraße and Lessingplatz, including the associated house connection sewers, will be renewed by the waste disposal company of the city of Chemnitz. The sewers will be laid using the open trench method with a total length of approx. 300 metres.
Lessingstraße and Lessingplatz will have to be fully closed to traffic in sections, although access to the social department stores' in Lessingstraße will always be possible. Traffic will be diverted via Hainstraße and Philippstraße or Peterstraße/Uhlandstraße in all construction phases. Access to the houses will be ensured during the construction work.
The total construction costs amount to approx. 1.25 million euros.
The road construction in the "Chemnitz-Sonnenberg" redevelopment area is co-financed by urban development funds from the federal and state governments.
The company ATS Chemnitz GmbH was commissioned to carry out the construction work.
