Coordinated expansion of Lessingstrasse and northern section of Lessingplatz completed

Following extensive construction work, Lessingstraße between Hainstraße and Lessingplatz and the northern section of Lessingplatz between Lessingstraße and Reinhardtstraße are fully reopened to traffic today. Coordinated work to renew the traffic facilities and the existing combined sewers has been taking place on these sections since the beginning of March 2020 with the involvement of the city's civil engineering department and the waste disposal company (ESC).

In addition to the structural expansion of the road sections and the junction with Sophienstraße, the public parking spaces were rearranged and the pavements on both sides of Lessingstraße and between Sophienstraße and Reinhardtstraße were restored. The pavements are paved with a 1.40 metre wide granite slab tread and the remaining areas are paved with granite cobblestones.

All junctions now have protruding side areas to clarify the parking spaces and prevent illegal parking on the one hand and to ensure better visibility of pedestrians at the crossing points on the other. This also contributes significantly to a reduction in speed in this traffic-calmed area. Additional ground indicators for blind and visually impaired people have been installed at the main crossings. In addition, 15 bicycle racks have been installed in the newly created areas around the kerbs.

The landward bus stop on Hainstraße immediately after the Lessingstraße junction was moved in front of the buildings at Hainstraße 94 and 96 in order to create the minimum length for bus stops and was made barrier-free.

16 new tree locations were prepared on one side of Lessingstraße. Planting is planned for spring 2021.

The ESC dismantled approx. 300 metres of the existing sewer on Lessingstraße and approx. 80 metres on Lessingplatz, including six manholes. The new sewer was laid along the same route with five new prefabricated manholes and a brick manhole structure. The connecting sewers along these routes were all renewed using the open trench method. The incoming sewer at Lessingplatz and the outgoing sewer at Reinhardtstraße were rehabilitated with a pipe liner. Twenty new connections for street drainage were made to the Lessingstraße combined sewer and ten new connections for street drainage were made to the Lessingplatz combined sewer.

The company ATS Chemnitz GmbH from Chemnitz was commissioned to carry out the construction work. The total construction costs totalled around 1.25 million euros, of which around 900,000 euros were for road construction and 350,000 euros for sewer construction.

The road construction in the "Chemnitz-Sonnenberg" redevelopment area was supported with urban development funding from the federal government and the Free State of Saxony.

This year's extension completes the three neighbouring road sections around Lessingplatz between Lessingstraße and Sebastian-Bach-Straße that have already been renovated. As in the section that has now been completed, the traffic areas were also expanded here between September 2018 and August 2019, the existing combined sewers were renewed and the drinking water pipe was also replaced by the supplier eins energie.

The overall expansion of Lessingplatz and Lessingstraße will ensure that the requirements of weekday road traffic are met, create continuity with the neighbouring road sections that have already been renovated and also make a lasting contribution to the urban development of the street area. To this end, existing structural deficits were eliminated and road safety improved.

The requirements of motorised traffic, cycling and pedestrian traffic were implemented, as was the demand for stationary traffic resulting from the urban development situation. In particular, the needs of people with disabilities were taken into account in the form of barrier-free development.
