Construction work on the wooden footbridge on the Chemnitz
Scouring under the footbridge at the building at Lohrstraße 42 is removed
Work begins today on the wooden footbridge behind the building at Lohrstraße 42, which runs directly alongside the Chemnitz. A so-called scouring - a depression in the ground caused by flowing water - will be removed under the wooden footbridge. The wooden footbridge will be closed during the construction work.
A fortification made of armourstones will be constructed, the bottom row of which consists of larger stones. These stones are also set on concrete to provide additional stability. The flat stone insert, on the other hand, is made with smaller stones, which are installed with a high degree of interlocking. The scouring under the footbridge was discovered during the most recent general inspection, which is regularly carried out on the wooden footbridge as an engineering structure.
Access to the construction site is a particular challenge. Access to the waters of the Chemnitz is via an extension of Lohrstraße between the pedestrian bridge and the start of the boardwalk. For this purpose, two willows and a locust tree will have to be felled and approx. 65 square metres of shrubs removed with special permission. The area will be re-vegetated once the work has been completed and the construction road has been removed.
The work in the waterway should be completed by 30 September 2024, in time for the start of the fish protection period.
As the wooden footbridge will not be accessible during the construction work, regular access to the Nordpark (Park Chemnitzaue) will only be possible via the main entrance in the extension of Further Straße during this period. Public use of the passageway through the building at Lohrstraße 42 to access the park path by the river has not been authorised by the owner of the property.
The costs of the construction project totalled around 105,000 euros. Of this, the construction costs amount to approx. 85,000 euros, with the development of the construction site alone accounting for a larger share of the costs.
The work is being carried out by the company Albert Ingenieurbau GmbH, Chemnitz. The planning was carried out by the ibb Chemnitz office, which is also responsible for construction supervision. In order to comply with the special nature conservation conditions associated with construction in and around the watercourse, species protection expert Dr Volkmar Kuschka, Flöha, was commissioned to provide ecological construction monitoring.
