Construction work on the outdoor area of the "Sonnenschein" daycare centre in Einsiedel
In connection with the planned measures to redesign the outdoor area of the "Sonnenschein" daycare centre in Einsiedel, an information event will be held at the centre this afternoon. Only parents whose children currently attend the centre are invited. Representatives of the City of Chemnitz will also be present and will be available to answer parents' questions.
Information will be provided on the status of planning, the expected start of the construction work and the necessary restrictions on daycare centre operations during the entire construction period. Taking into account the invitation to tender for the construction project and its results, construction is currently expected to begin on 7 August 2017. The main construction work should be completed by the end of 2017 so that the overall construction project can be finalised with the exterior planting in spring 2018. The daycare centre will then have a beautiful, child-friendly outdoor area with a variety of play areas from the second quarter of 2018.
Prior to this, the usual soil tests for construction projects were carried out (starting in October 2015), during which the soil contamination known and frequently occurring in the city of Chemnitz was identified. In August 2016, a further soil survey commissioned by Chemnitz city council found that some limit values were exceeded in places in deeper soil layers (from 20 cm below the turf).
As a precautionary measure, it was decided to replace parts of the soil in connection with the redesign of the outdoor area. This soil contamination was probably caused by the bombing raids at the end of the Second World War, during which Einsiedel was also badly hit. Many houses were destroyed at the time. This rubble was used as filling material in the post-war period.
The entire construction project cost over 250,000 euros and was largely subsidised by the Free State of Saxony.
