Construction work in Küchwaldpark
Car park unsealing at the northern end of Küchwaldring street - construction to start in December
The City of Chemnitz is gradually reorganising parking in the area around Küchwaldpark.
The current parking spaces for perpendicular parkers at the northern end of Küchwaldring street in the direction of Küchwaldpark are located in the area of the public park.
As part of a compensatory measure to repair the flood damage in the city park, the parking spaces are now to be broken up and sown with grass after the soil has been applied. A raised kerb will be installed to demarcate the car park from the road, which will make driving and parking impossible in future.
With the construction of the car park in the immediate vicinity of the aforementioned parking spaces, sufficient parking space will be available so that these will no longer be absolutely necessary. Access to this car park will be from Leipziger Straße. People looking for a parking space should drive directly to this car park in future in order to avoid search traffic on Küchwaldring.
Subject to weather conditions, construction work will begin on 12 December 2016 and should be completed before the end of the year. The remaining landscaping work should then be completed by 30 April 2017. Simonsen Freianlagen Freiraumplanungsgesellschaft mbH, Wilsdruff, was commissioned with the planning. Fachcenter Garten + STL-Bau GmbH, Hauptmannsgrün, will be responsible for implementation.
The costs for the redesign of this area are estimated to total around 13,000 euros for planning and construction services.
Küchwaldpark, designed by city garden director Otto Werner, is the largest park in Chemnitz and one of the largest parks in Saxony, covering 97 hectares. It is very popular with the city's residents and visitors, which is why there is also a high demand for car parking spaces in its vicinity. The use of various areas has sometimes led to serious damage to the green spaces, endangering visitors and creating an unsightly entrance effect.
