Construction work begins on market fountain

Market square will be partially closed from 15 March

The preparatory construction work for the erection of the market fountain begins on 15 March. Part of the market square will be cordoned off for this purpose. The weekly market will take place despite the construction work.

The start of construction originally planned for 2020 was postponed to March. On the one hand, the civil engineering work had to be re-tendered, and on the other hand, this project was not spared from corona-related travel and delivery restrictions. The fountain is due to go into operation this summer, according to Mayor Michael Stötzer.

The work by London-based German artist Daniel Widrig entitled "Manifold" won the international artistic competition for a market fountain in Chemnitz in June 2019. The fountain's sculptures, which are up to 2.80 metres tall, are made of shiny, bright stainless steel and, in combination with the water, will provide an interesting eye-catcher on the market. The cost of the market fountain is 450,000 euros.

In 2018, the City of Chemnitz Planning, Building and Environment Committee commissioned the city to launch an artistic competition for the construction of a market fountain. In November 2016, the Planning, Building and Environment Committee had already decided on the further barrier-free redesign and upgrading of Markt, Neumarkt and Jakobikirchplatz with water features and additional seating. A total of 1.15 million euros was earmarked for this in the municipal budget.
