Construction work at the junction continues with protective clothing
Contamination in the soil in the area of Zschopauer Straße/Bahnhofstraße
From next week, construction workers at the Zschopauer Straße/Bahnhofsstraße junction will be working in protective suits and breathing masks. The reason for this is contaminated soil that was found during the construction work.
So-called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were found at a depth of 3.5 metres in the bottom of the trench during the construction work. These led to nausea and headaches among the workers. The cause of the contamination is not known and the size of the contaminated area has not yet been conclusively determined.
As the air measurements have shown, there is no health risk for other road users due to the rapid dilution of the gases outside the trench. Therefore, no further protective measures are required outside the area.
Construction work has been underway at the Zschopauer Straße/Bahnhofstraße junction since summer 2021. The combined sewer is being laid and the new construction sites in the area are being developed.
