Construction work at Moritzpark completed
Another section of the riverside park completed
A green strip with a row of Italian poplar trees was planted along Annaberger Strasse in spring 2015 to border the "riverside beach". These trees are intended as interim greenery until the final development of the area.
By the end of July this year, the entire public area had been redesigned in warm, light materials and colours in line with the idea of a "lakeside beach". Around 720 m³ of soil was moved to model the terrain. In order to make the proximity to the river a tangible experience, the embankment was flattened in some areas and concrete seating blocks were arranged. In addition, a wooden deck was built here as a viewing platform above a shaft for the district heating supply.
Around 3,400 m² of new lawns were laid on the non-commercial areas and ornamental grasses were planted in four sub-areas totalling 235 m². The area of the main entrance on the corner of Annaberger Strasse and Bahnhofstrasse was designed as a "tree gate" with the installation of a wooden deck level with the ground and the planting of three plane trees. Bicycle racks have also been installed here.
25 new trees were planted, including black pines as well as gledychias. Of the few trees that were previously present, those that were safe for traffic and valuable in terms of design were preserved.
Connoisseurs of local wood sculpture will notice that the sculpture "Mooreiche" by Hans Brockhage, which has been in storage for years, has found a new location here. The sculpture originally stood in the Alfred-Neubert-Straße residential area, but was dismantled there during urban redevelopment measures.
The lengthy fencing off of the public green space with construction fences even after the construction work had been completed was necessary as the newly laid lawns were very slow to develop due to the extreme drought in July and August and were therefore not yet suitable for public use.
The planning office Architektur Concept Pfaffhausen und Staudte GbR from Zwickau supported the Parks Department in the development of the park. The construction work was awarded to Grünanlagenbau Uwe Pügner from Schwarzenberg, a company experienced in landscaping, following a public tender.
In total, the city of Chemnitz invested around 350,000 euros in the construction and planning services for the redesign of the area, 2/3 of which was refinanced by funding from the SEP urban renewal programme.
This means that the city has taken a major step forward in its plan to develop a green belt along the Chemnitz with relatively little municipal funding. Plans are currently underway to further develop the riverside park along the "Aue" road on the opposite side.
