Construction project for the new extension to the municipal music school: additional stabilisation measures required for the foundations
The new extension to the Chemnitz Municipal Music School on Hohe Straße is currently under construction. In future, the building will be connected to the gable end of the listed old building. The City of Chemnitz is investing 2.3 million euros in this extensive construction project (PM 357 dated 10/06/2013 - www.chemnitz.de). In the first construction phase, the former gymnasium on the site was demolished along with the basement. In the course of this demolition work, it has now been established that the gable wall of the existing building and the associated foundations no longer have a solid bond and that additional stabilisation measures for the foundations are therefore required.
The ongoing work on the foundations in the construction site section therefore had to be stopped for the time being. In order to enable the necessary stabilisation of the foundations, defects in the existing masonry must be filled and repointed. In addition, all gable openings had to be fixed and the basement ceiling had to be braced. In addition, external support foundations and the installation of a support structure to reinforce the corner area are necessary.
Due to the complicated stabilisation work, restricted areas of eight metres
Due to the complicated stabilisation work, restricted areas of eight metres - starting from the gable wall - into the interior of the building are necessary for safety reasons. This means that all toilet facilities and the neighbouring
This means that all toilet facilities and the 13 adjoining classrooms cannot be used during the necessary stabilisation work.
The regular start of the school year at the Chemnitz Municipal Music School is not jeopardised despite this additional and difficult work on the music school building. However, pupils and teachers are asked to understand the temporary restrictions: Toilet containers will be set up before the construction work begins in order to maintain school operations. In addition, further rooms in the alternative building at Weststraße 19, which is already being used by the music school, will have to be occupied for lessons.
The City of Chemnitz/Building Management and Structural Engineering is currently preparing and tendering the stabilisation work required on the Chemnitz Municipal Music School extension construction site. Work is to begin as soon as possible. In the opinion of the construction experts, the additional extensive work now required will probably lead to an extension of the overall construction period by around one month.
