Construction project begins: Fraunhoferstrasse to be extended to extended to Werner-Seelenbinder-Straße
City thus improves the connection of the technology campus to the main transport network
According to the civil engineering office, construction work will begin on 19 October to extend Fraunhoferstraße by around 1,200 metres to Werner-Seelenbinder-Straße. It is to be connected to Werner-Seelenbinder-Straße by a roundabout.
The project, which is part of the city's traffic development plan, will create a continuous link from Fraunhoferstraße (formerly Güterbahnhofstraße) via Reichenhainer Straße and Werner-Seelenbinder-Straße to the Südring and the A72 motorway. The city is pursuing this objective in particular with regard to the expansion of the technology campus, which will thus have a direct connection to the main transport network.
The road construction project, which is due to begin shortly, will create the conditions for expanding the Technology Campus by around 22 hectares. This will provide additional areas for technology-orientated companies, as well as for Chemnitz University of Technology and other research facilities.
The future continuous Fraunhoferstraße will also relieve traffic on Reichenhainer Straße - this is an essential prerequisite for the realisation and operation of the Chemnitz model in Reichenhainer Straße.
Construction details
Fraunhoferstrasse will be widened to a width of 6.5 metres, with cycle lanes and footpaths on both sides along its entire length and longitudinal parking lanes on both sides of one section. The road construction also includes a level crossing of the Chemnitz Model railway line with traffic lights and a railway barrier system. Furthermore, a retaining wall with a length of around 167 metres and a maximum height of up to 3.45 metres is required in the area of the CVAG premises. The junctions of the future access roads will also be created as part of the expansion.
The new Fraunhoferstrasse will be equipped with all media such as sewerage, electricity, gas, drinking water/fire-fighting water, lighting and communications in the area of the planned campus extensions. The project is being jointly coordinated by the city's civil engineering department, the energy supplier "eins" and the drainage company ESC.
Firstly, the construction site is to be cleared and then the sewer construction will begin from the end of the existing Fraunhoferstraße. From here, the media will then be laid and the extension to Werner Seelenbinder Straße will follow.
The construction work is due to be completed in May 2017. The financial construction volume amounts to around 4.5 million euros. The road construction is being funded by the federal and state governments to the tune of 85 per cent as part of the "Improvement of the regional economic structure" joint task.
The bidding consortium Günter Hüttner + Co. GmbH (09125 Chemnitz) / Max Bögl Stiftung & Co. KG (09481 Elterlein) was commissioned with the construction work.
