Construction of new two-court sports hall at Andrégymnasium begins
The construction of a new, modern two-court sports hall can begin at Dr Wilhelm André Grammar School and the existing gym will also be renovated. This was decided by the city council at its meeting today.
The new 22 x 44 metre sports hall is to be built on the corner of Henriettenstrasse and Barbarossastrasse. It will be used exclusively for school and club sports. The level of the hall will be lowered 3 metres below that of the existing building in order to fit the new building into the historic surroundings of the district. The building and facilities will be barrier-free and disabled-friendly, including the installation of a lift.
The outdoor facilities will include break areas and outdoor sports facilities. Parking spaces for bicycles will also be provided. Recreation and exercise areas will be designed for breaks, for example with small areas for bouncy games, balancing equipment, a climbing wall and a stone table for draughts and chess.
The outdoor facilities include a 20 x 40 metre all-weather pitch, a short-distance running track, a shot put facility with two lanes, a long jump facility with two lanes as well as goals, basketball stands and volleyball posts.
During the renovation of the existing gymnasium, a second escape route with a smoke-tight door will be installed. The existing wooden doors will be repaired. Wall panelling with a ballet bar will be installed for gymnastics exercises. In addition, the sports floor will be completely resurfaced and some of the sports equipment will be removed.
Construction of the Zweifeldhalle is scheduled to begin in April 2014, with the outdoor facilities to be tackled in May - they should be completed in autumn 2014. According to current plans, the Zweifeldhalle will be handed over in March 2015 and the renovated gymnasium in April of next year. The project will be completed in July 2015 when the outdoor facilities are finished.
The total cost of the two-court sports hall, the outdoor facilities and the renovation of the gymnasium is around 4.26 million euros. The state of Saxony is subsidising the construction with 1.58 million euros. The corresponding funding cheque from the Free State was handed over to the city of Chemnitz in December 2012, after which the implementation planning for the project began.
