Construction of a new primary school on the southern Sonnenberg
Laying of the foundation stone on 8 October, 3 pm, Jakobstraße 20
The foundation stone for a future primary school with sports hall will be laid on Thursday, 8 October at 3 p.m. at Jakobstraße 20 in southern Sonnenberg. In the presence of Michael Stötzer, Mayor of Chemnitz, representatives of the city administration, the neighbourhood management, the Sächsische Aufbaubank and various planning offices as well as representatives of the construction companies and businesses involved so far, the foundation stone roll will be placed in a time capsule with current contemporary testimonies as well as plans and information material on the building.
There will also be a presentation of the building and outdoor facilities on site, where questions can be asked.
Representatives of the media are cordially invited.
A new primary school for 224 children with a sports hall and outdoor facilities is being built. This was decided by the city council in May 2020 (B-095/2020). The new primary school is located in school district IV. The need to expand primary school capacity by two classes was determined for this school district in autumn 2018.
Land first had to be acquired for the construction work.
In order to guarantee the start of school operations in September 2021, a general contractor was commissioned in this case - with the approval of the Sächsische Aufbaubank. The SAB has also confirmed an early start to the project in March 2020, which does not affect the funding. This meant that the preparatory construction measures, such as explosive ordnance probing, foundation preparation and authorisation for tree felling, could begin on time.
However, the start of the construction project was briefly delayed by the results of the explosive ordnance survey. All earthworks had to be halted for the time being due to the suspicion of a significant discovery of explosive ordnance. The largest evacuation measure to date had to be prepared for mid-June 2020 with a radius of one kilometre and around 17,000 people affected. Fortunately, the suspected case was not confirmed, meaning that the construction site was confirmed to be free of explosive ordnance on 18 June 2020 and civil engineering work could begin. The bored pile foundation work was completed at the beginning of September 2020 and work began on the floor slab.
A 60 cm thick floor slab was poured on 1 October 2020. On this day, a total of 920 cubic metres of concrete were poured, encasing 95 tonnes of reinforcing steel. This required 140 concrete deliveries with a total of 23 vehicles.
The shell of the building is scheduled for completion by the end of the first quarter of 2021. The new primary school pupils should take possession of their school at the start of the 2021/2022 school year. The sports hall can then also be handed over after the autumn holidays in 2021.
The total budget for the new building project is 18.5 million euros. It is being funded with around 10.5 million euros from the "School Infrastructure Ordinance" funding programme.
