Construction measures at Schönau school decided
City council approves the construction of a lift and the renovation of the outdoor facilities
At its meeting yesterday, the Chemnitz City Council decided to have construction work carried out at Schönau Primary and Secondary School, subject to the approval of funding, on the one hand to create accessibility in the building and on the other to renovate the outdoor facilities. A budget of 2.89 million euros is available for the project. Funding totalling 1.5 million euros has been applied for.
The Schönau primary and secondary school consists of a listed old building and an adjoining new building. The old building, which has already been renovated, is now to be made barrier-free with the addition of a lift with five stops. In addition, a barrier-free toilet room is to be added to the basement.
Construction of the lift extension to the building and the barrier-free toilet is scheduled to begin at the end of March 2025.
The historic school building, which was inaugurated in October 1914, is listed as a cultural monument, including the grounds, as the "Schönau School" ensemble. Accordingly, all refurbishment measures must be planned and carried out in a manner compatible with the listed building.
The existing outdoor facilities are heavily utilised due to their triple use as a school recreation area for the primary school, the secondary school and as an open space for after-school care. In addition, there are currently no outdoor sports areas on the site that can be used for sports lessons.
Therefore, a comprehensive redesign of the outdoor facilities of the current schoolyard area and the planning of new sports facilities that can be used all year round for school sports lessons is required.
The schoolyard adjoining the school building to the north is to be redesigned as a playground with attractive exercise, play and recreational facilities for pupils from Year 1 to Year 10. The various requirements of the schoolyard area as a service, maintenance and delivery access road are to be taken into account.
The plan is to completely rebuild the schoolyard areas with a concrete block paving and asphalt surface. The steps in the outdoor area are also to be renewed.
The outdated and unattractive wooded area on the embankment is to be cleared and replaced with attractive new planting adapted to the current climate requirements.
There are plans to install a short-distance sprint track and a long jump facility on the northern lawn. A streetball area with a ball fence will be installed on the site of the former container school. For year-round use of the outdoor sports facilities, a water-permeable synthetic surface will be chosen to match the planned sports uses. Seating will be installed near the sports areas.
In the western section of the schoolyard, an enclosed, locked rubbish bin and a barrier-free car parking space will be provided. In the northern section of the schoolyard, bicycle racks and bicycle parking spaces in a high-low arrangement along the eastern façade will provide opportunities to park bicycles.
The defective underground pipes and manholes, which had already been identified and documented in preparation for the new primary school building, will be completely renewed as a separate system. The construction site access road built for the new primary school in 2013/14 will also be dismantled. The original appearance of the listed southern school access road from Guerickestraße, which is paved with natural stone paving, will be restored, including the hedge planting.
In 2026, a sewer renewal on Guerickestraße will be carried out by eins/inetz, which will entail a complete renovation of the underground pipes. The construction work on the outdoor area of Schönau School is therefore planned from the beginning of 2027 to December 2028.
