Congratulations on your 100th birthday!

Gerda Schulze celebrates her "milestone" birthday on 9 April 2016

Gerda Schulze will turn 100 on 9 April 2016. A representative of the mayor's office at Jagdschänkenstraße 157 in 09116 Chemnitz sends the city of Chemnitz's congratulations to the jubilarian on her birthday.

The farm in Stelzendorf, where Gerda Schulze, née Ranft, was born 100 years ago, is still her home today. Once bought by her grandparents, it was extended in the 1940s to include stables and an indoor riding arena. The senior citizen has spent her entire life here. Despite some health restrictions, she still lives here in her own flat and keeps herself mentally fit by reading the newspaper every day. She is supported by her two grandchildren, who also look after her grandmother.

Gerda Schulze fondly remembers the years when she went out dancing and spent her free time at the Stelzendorf gymnastics club and horse riding. She met her future husband Hilmar Schulze, who shared her passion for dancing, at a farmers' ball. But their happiness did not last long. Neither her brother nor her husband returned from the war. Their only son Christian, born in 1944, died in 2013.

Today, in addition to grandson Jens and granddaughter Anett, the family has four great-grandchildren aged between 10 and 27.
