Congratulations on your 100th birthday!

Helmut Uhlig celebrates his "milestone" birthday on 19 September 2016

Helmut Uhlig reached the age of 100 on 19 September 2016.

A representative of the mayor's office will be bringing the city of Chemnitz's congratulations to the birthday boy at the "Am Wald" nursing home, Rabensteiner Straße 14 in 09224 Chemnitz.

Born in Wittgensdorf, he lived in the Chemnitz district until recently and ran his own household, supported by family, neighbours and a care service.

His wife Martha, who died in 2006, also came from here. They had known each other since childhood, were neighbours' children and lived together as husband and wife for 62 years. Their marriage, which they entered into in November 1943, produced four children.

Helmut Uhlig had previously completed an apprenticeship as a bobbin bobber and completed his military service. Immediately afterwards, he was called up for military service and sent to the Eastern Front. It was a minor miracle that he returned home from Russian captivity exactly on his birthday in 1945.

Until his retirement, the family man worked at the Chemnitz industrial plant and enjoyed spending his free time in the trombone choir, of which he was a member, and in his allotment garden.

When the jubilarian recalls events from his long life with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren today, he is sure to mention his family doctor in Wittgensdorf, who prophesied: "You will definitely live to be 100!"
