Congratulations on your 100th birthday!
Hedwig Walther celebrates her "round" birthday on 7 November 2013
Hedwig Walther will turn 100 on 7 November 2013 in Chemnitz. A representative of the Mayor's Office will be wishing her a happy birthday at 2.30 p.m. at the AZURIT Seniorenzentrum Brühl in Untere Aktienstraße 2 in 09111 Chemnitz.
Hedwig Walther didn't want to plan beyond this date until now: "First turn a hundred, then we'll see," was her motto. However, family and friends have been preparing for this day for a long time. After all, it is a very special anniversary that they will be celebrating at the Brühl senior centre, Hedwig Walther's current home.
It was by no means foreseeable that the jubilarian would one day reach this age.
As an active member of the anti-fascist youth movement, the Chemnitz-born woman exposed herself to great danger at a young age and was imprisoned in the Kaßberg prison as a consequence. She lost her husband Erwin Walther at a very early age; he did not survive the concentration camp and penal battalion and died in 1942. Hedwig Walther is recognised as a victim of persecution by the Nazi regime.
She worked until the age of 73 and felt at home at VEB Großdrehmaschinenbau "8. Mai", where she worked for many years in the kitchen and later in the warehouse. She kept fit with sport, she was passionate about apparatus gymnastics and gymnastics.
Today, she walks around the senior centre with her walking frame and is happy about it. After suffering a fractured neck of femur in the spring, things didn't look so good at the time. Her family, which includes her son and daughter-in-law, four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, is all the happier that they can all celebrate Hedwig Walther's 100th birthday together.
