Conflicts over our soils

Adult education centre: Reading and discussion with Tanja Busse on 19 November, 7 p.m., event hall in the TIETZ, 3rd floor

On Tuesday, 19 November, from 7 pm, interested parties are invited to an event with journalist Tanja Busse. She will be presenting her book "Der Grund. The new conflicts over our soils - and how they can be resolved".

Participation is free of charge. Registration is possible by telephone on 0371 488 4343 or online at www.vhs-chemnitz.de/kurs/W2410260.

In the book, Tanja Busse and her co-author Christiane Grefe shed light on current debates and conflicts over soil protection. The authors analyse how individual corporations are buying up large areas of land in eastern Germany, while young people have hardly any access to land and smaller farms are often unable to keep up with the price pressure. Fertile soils are also being lost due to construction activities, over-fertilisation, pesticides and increasing extreme weather events. The consequences not only affect soil quality, but also put a strain on water, animals and plants.

Key questions will be addressed in the discussion: What are the current problems with soil policy and where are approaches for change? How can agricultural businesses secure their land in the long term? What role could agricultural structure laws play in this?

The author Tanja Busse has been researching and publishing on the topics of agriculture, nutrition, biodiversity and sustainability for many years. Her best-known books include "Die Einkaufsrevolution" and "Das Sterben der anderen".

The evening will be moderated by Volkmar Zschocke.

The event is a cooperation between Weiterdenken - Heinrich Böll Foundation Saxony and the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre.
