Conflict resolution in public spaces
Working group develops proposals to improve the feeling of safety in the city centre
At its meeting on 6 April, Chemnitz City Council received an overview of the results of the Department 3's review of a structure for conflict resolution in public spaces. The situation analysis shows that there is a need for much more communication and networking between all those who are already working to promote safe coexistence in Chemnitz.
In the course of the situation analysis process, the steering group made up of representatives of the urban community and the city administration defined the area of Chemnitz city centre as a focus for action. With the support of the Competence Centre for Municipal Conflict Counselling of the Association for the Promotion of Education - VFB Salzwedel e.V., a working group has now been set up to address the challenges of safety in the city centre.
Committed Chemnitz residents with very different perspectives have been recruited to join the group. These include representatives from the office of the municipal prevention council, the Chemnitz-Mitte citizens' platform, the Reitbahnviertel neighbourhood management and the social support project for refugees (Arbeiterwohlfahrt Soziale Dienste Chemnitz und Umgebung gGmbH), the neighbourhood pilots, AJZ Streetwork - Mobile Jugendarbeit (AJZ e. V.), the Community Coordination Centre (AJZ e. V.) and the City of Chemnitz.V.) , the community coordination Hilbersdorf/Ebersdorf/Brühl (Neue Arbeit Chemnitz e. V.) , the network for cultural and youth work e. V. "Jugend voran", the Stadtmission Chemnitz e. V. Homeless Aid, AGUIA e. V. Migration Counselling, Chemnitzer Wirtschaftsförderungs- und Entwicklungsgesellschaft mbH "Initiative ChemnitzCity", INPEOS e. V. Anti Gewalt Büro, Bürgerhaus City e. V. and Weltecho e. V./Initiative Hand in Hand.
The result is a catalogue of suggestions on how to deal with some of the existing challenges. The proposals are to be presented and discussed at a security conference in 2022.
