Completion of the Agnesstrasse 11 school building for the expansion of Josephinen Secondary School in December 2017

The renovation of the Agnesstraße 11 school building for the expansion of Josephinen Secondary School, which was approved by the city council in 2015, began in March 2016. Completion is scheduled for December 2017, with construction and planning costs totalling around 4.9 million euros.

The building was inaugurated in 1896 as a girls' school and was used as a vocational school for health and social services until 2010; at the start of the refurbishment, the school building was empty or was used as a teaching resource centre for various schools in Chemnitz.

The aim of the refurbishment was to provide urgently needed secondary school capacity. After completion, the Josephinen-Oberschule (two school buildings) at Josephinenplatz and the building at Agnesstraße 11 will have a total of three secondary school classes.
The Agnesstraße building will be completely barrier-free.

The entrance and connecting area to the other school building and the gymnasiums will be demolished and rebuilt. This means that for the first time in the history of the school site, there is a direct connection between the individual school buildings.

The interior was completely refurbished with the exception of the bare ceilings and the load-bearing walls. The following measures were implemented in detail:

The basement walls were sealed against moisture with a horizontal and vertical barrier. The basement floor was lowered and classrooms were installed in the basement. A second staircase was installed to ensure a second structural escape route. Furthermore, sanitary facilities were installed on all upper floors. The floors, ceilings (now with improved room acoustics), wall panelling, doors and windows as well as the heating, electrical and sanitary installations were completely renewed. The listed façade has been renovated, the roofing renewed and the playground redesigned.

A further step in the modernisation of the secondary school site will begin in 2018 with the renovation of the second gymnasium. The building on Josephinenplatz will then be structurally adapted to meet current fire safety regulations.
