Commemoration of the victims of National Socialism
Wreath-laying ceremony in the Park of the Victims of Fascism on 27 January, 10 a.m.
To mark the nationwide day of remembrance for the victims of National Socialism, a commemoration will take place in Chemnitz on Friday, 27 January at 10 a.m. at the memorial in the Park of the Victims of Fascism. In addition to Lord Mayor Sven Schulze, State Parliament President Dr Matthias Rößler and Minister President Michael Kretschmer will also take part.
Mayor Sven Schulze will lay a wreath on behalf of the City of Chemnitz and the City Council, Dr Matthias Rößler will lay a wreath on behalf of the Saxon State Parliament and Michael Kretschmer will lay a wreath on behalf of the Saxon State Government. Members of the Saxon State Parliament, the Bundestag, mayors and representatives of the Jewish community, the Presidium of the Saxon State Parliament, city council factions, schools and citizens will also be present.
In addition to the commemorative speeches, pupils from the Georgius Agricola Gymnasium Chemnitz will present a cultural programme. Renate Aris, one of the last Holocaust survivors in Saxony, will also address the guests.
Afterwards, Sven Schulze, Dr Matthias Rößler and Michael Kretschmer will visit the Georgius-Agricola-Gymnasium.

Background: Since the end of the war, the victims of National Socialist tyranny have been commemorated in Karl-Marx-Stadt/Chemnitz. On 27 January 1945, Soviet troops liberated the Auschwitz concentration and extermination camp. Following an initiative by former Federal President Roman Herzog, 27 January has been observed as a day of remembrance for the victims of National Socialism in the Federal Republic of Germany since 1996.

The roundabout at Agricola-Gymnasium will not be available for parking on this day between 6 am and 12 noon. During the arrival and departure of participants at the event, there may be temporary disruptions on the Park der Opfer des Faschismus street, which is currently being used as a diversion for Zschopauer Straße. The Chemnitz Police Department will be on site to assist with traffic regulations.
