Commemoration of the victims of National Socialism
Wreath-laying ceremony in the Park of the Victims of Fascism on 27 January, 10 a.m.
To mark the nationwide day of remembrance for the victims of National Socialism, a commemoration will take place in Chemnitz on Thursday, 27 January at 10 a.m. at the memorial in the Park of the Victims of Fascism. Lord Mayor Sven Schulze will lay a wreath on behalf of the City of Chemnitz and the City Council.
"77 years ago, a twelve-year National Socialist reign of terror came to an end and with it a policy of murderous racial madness under which millions of people lost their lives. This must not be forgotten, all this horror was possible under the eyes of a silent mass. Coming to terms with history also means coming to terms with guilt and responsibility. Not only to point the finger at the perpetrators, but also at those who tolerated it, who looked the other way or even denounced it. Anyone who spoke out against this dictatorship risked their life. Shocking! But an important lesson for the future: we must prevent a repetition for all time. That is why the preservation and protection of democracy is so enormously important. Everyone should have learnt this from the history of the Second World War. We must feel responsible for keeping these memories alive, for continuing to report on them and for tirelessly telling future generations about what happened," says Lord Mayor Sven Schulze.
The victims of National Socialist tyranny have been commemorated in Karl-Marx-Stadt/Chemnitz since the end of the war. On 27 January 1945, Soviet troops liberated the Auschwitz concentration and extermination camp. Following an initiative by former Federal President Roman Herzog, 27 January has been observed as a day of remembrance for the victims of National Socialism in the Federal Republic of Germany since 1996.
