On Friday, 8 May at 3 pm, the City of Chemnitz invites you to the commemorative event "Europe - from liberation to reconciliation" at the bench for Justin Sonder on Brühl, Brühl 46, to mark the end of the Second World War 81 years ago. Mayor Ralph Burghart will be joined by US Consul General Jodi Breisler and Nancy Frank, descendant of Jewish families from Chemnitz, who will give speeches. The programme is intended to commemorate the causes and effects of the Second World War, but also to look to the future together.
The event will take place outdoors and is open to the public. Registration is not required. Admission is free. Representatives of the media are also invited.
The event will be artistically accompanied by the puppet theatre of the Chemnitz Municipal Theatre with a collage of scenes and letters relating to the production "We will follow" and a string quartet from the Chemnitz Municipal Music School.
The location at the Justin Sonder bench was deliberately chosen. Justin Sonder, honorary citizen of Chemnitz and Auschwitz survivor, spent his life talking to young people, educating them, arousing interest, raising awareness and promoting democracy and openness to the world. During Europe Week, young people and adults will set an example for cohesion, diversity and peace at his memorial.
