Commemorating the end of the war 70 years ago
8 May 1945 marks the end of the Second World War in Europe. As a day of remembrance, it commemorates the end of the war and the liberation from National Socialism every year.
To mark the 70th anniversary, a commemorative event will be held on the initiative of the city council on 8 May at 9 a.m. in the municipal cemetery at the war cemetery on Richterweg.
In addition to fallen Soviet soldiers, prisoners of war and forced labourers who lost their lives here in the region also rest in this part of the cemetery. Wreaths are laid in memory of the war dead. The Lord Mayor calls on the people of Chemnitz to take part in the commemorative event.
Mayor Miko Runkel gives the speech on behalf of the Lord Mayoress. She is in the twin city of Volgograd at the time and attends various commemorative events in the twin city to mark the 70th anniversary of the end of the war.
