Climate protection to have your say
Environmental Agency: Event on 29 June, 3.30 to 5.30 pm at pentagon 3, Brückenstraße 17
On Wednesday, 29 June, from 3.30 to 5.30 p.m., the City of Chemnitz's environmental department is hosting an information event at pentagon 3, Brückenstraße 17. The event will focus on the question of how the city of Chemnitz can better involve and actively shape its population in climate protection and climate change adaptation. The aim is for Chemnitz residents to exchange information and ideas with city employees on the topics of energy and CO2, renewable energies, mobility, adaptation to climate change and climate protection as a joint task. There will also be an opportunity to outline ideas for new measures to be included in the revised climate protection programme.

In 2019, the City of Chemnitz was awarded gold status for the second time in the European Energy Award (eea®), a European certification process for urban climate protection. However, current IPCC scenarios show that global efforts to date are not enough to keep global warming below two degrees. This is why we also need to step up our efforts at a local level. The City of Chemnitz is currently revising its integrated climate protection programme from 2012 under the leadership of the Environmental Agency. In addition to new political objectives and the development of the city's energy and CO2 balance, the programme provides an overview of planned and ongoing climate protection and climate change adaptation measures.
Climate protection in municipalities is recognised by the federal and state governments as playing a key role, as human activities, particularly in cities, are closely linked to energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions in almost all areas of life. For the city of Chemnitz itself, the scope for action is quite limited: the city can only act directly with regard to its own properties and thus directly influence just under three per cent of greenhouse gas emissions. The citizens of Chemnitz therefore play a decisive role in achieving the city's climate protection goals. In addition, adapting to climate change is becoming increasingly important for a liveable city.
Increasing global warming due to excessive greenhouse gas emissions, combined with the occurrence of extreme climatic events such as periods of heat and drought, heavy rainfall and storms, as well as changes in nature and the cultural landscape, are now also being strongly felt in Chemnitz.
For the world's leading climate researchers, human activities are almost certainly the main cause of global warming since the middle of the 20th century. This includes the emission of greenhouse gases, particularly in the form of CO2.
