Climate protection and sustainability in the city of Chemnitz
Lord Mayor discusses upcoming challenges with the Chemnitz energy team
The Chemnitz energy team met today with Mayor Sven Schulze for a working session. They discussed the next steps to be taken in order to receive the European Energy Award again next year. Due to stricter regulations, both the City of Chemnitz and all companies active in this field must intensify their efforts.
Important areas in which the city's climate protection activities will be intensified include
- Expansion of renewable energies, sector coupling, H2 strategy, also as a location factor for industry and commerce
- Conversion of generation plants and grid expansion at eins
- Expansion of the eins product range, e.g. tenant electricity
- Climate-neutral administration by 2035
- Comprehensive circular economy
- Utilisation of regional resources
- Significant increase in pedestrian and cycle paths
- Greenhouse gas-free drives for commercial vehicles (CVAG, ASR)
In addition, a proposal will be made to the city council to aim for climate neutrality by 2040, if possible earlier. The energy team will now meet regularly with the Lord Mayor to discuss the next steps together.
Climate protection is a global problem, but it starts at a local level. That is why the City of Chemnitz has had an energy team since 2010, in which representatives of the City of Chemnitz, municipal companies such as eins and ASR, trade, commerce and industry as well as environmental organisations and associations discuss how Chemnitz can become more climate-friendly and energy-efficient.
The city's regular certification with the European Energy Award in Gold is not least a result of the efforts of the energy team and its network partners.
