Clear road: Conversion of the junction completed / New traffic lights go into operation
EU funding programme for the urban traffic management system - Renewal of the traffic lights on the last section of Leipziger Straße to speed up bus route 21 completed today
As announced, the final construction phase on Leipziger Straße from Winklerstraße to Hartmannstraße will be completed today with the commissioning of the Leipziger/Salzstraße traffic lights.
Following the installation work for the new traffic lights on Leipziger/Salzstraße, which had already been completed by Easter, the construction site traffic lights were used to renew the road surface in the junction area. Since November, an additional right-turn lane has also been created on Hartmannstraße between Bergstraße and Leipziger Straße in the landward direction. This third landward lane and the resulting separation of left-turning, straight-ahead and right-turning traffic increases the efficiency of the junction at Leipziger Straße.
From today, the new traffic light system will allow buses on route 21 to travel faster along the entire Leipziger Straße. The measures are an essential part of an EU funding programme to expand the urban traffic management system, which the city of Chemnitz has been implementing since 2012 and will complete in summer 2015. The European Union is providing grants totalling €2.65 million from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) for the entire project, which has an estimated budget of €3.8 million.
The traffic lights in the final construction phase on Leipziger Strasse were realised by Swarco Traffic Systems, Leipzig branch (Leipziger/Hartmannstrasse traffic lights) and Stührenberg Gera (Leipziger/Winklerstrasse and Leipziger/Salzstrasse traffic lights). The construction costs for this totalled 275,000 euros. The installation of the additional lane was realised by STRABAG Wilkau-Haßlau. The construction costs totalled 160,000 euros and were subsidised by the Free State.
