Claim to holy ground: The Israeli-Palestinian conflict over the Temple Mount

The lecture on Wednesday, 28 April, from 7.30 to 9 pm, is dedicated to the conflict over the Temple Mount Plateau in Jerusalem, which has been going on for centuries. Joseph Croitoru will talk about this conflict, its history and current developments. The Temple Mount in Jerusalem was once the site of the Jewish Temple, which was destroyed by the Babylonians and then rebuilt by the Romans. Muslims later built two mosques there, making this place the third most important sanctuary of Islam. For a long time, entering the Temple Mount plateau was taboo for religious Jews. Now, however, they are making pilgrimages to the Mount in ever greater numbers and are demanding to be allowed to pray and even build a synagogue on the site of the mosques. The Palestinians feel increasingly provoked, especially as the Jewish zealots are supported by high-ranking right-wing Israeli politicians. Israel is responding to Palestinian resistance with increasingly rigid controls.
Dr Joseph Croitoru is a historian, freelance journalist and author for various major German and Swiss daily newspapers, among others. His latest book will be published in February 2021: "Al-Aqsa or Temple Mount. The eternal battle for Jerusalem's holy sites".
