Civil engineering measures in Chemnitz in 2013: major bridge and road construction projects remain priorities - road surface repairs, bridge maintenance work and hydraulic engineering also on schedule

In the equally challenging complex measure of widening the B 174 to four lanes in the section between Südring and Bergfrieden, for which the city of Chemnitz is responsible, the section from Südring to Georgistraße is to be realised this year. Around 20 million euros will be invested here. As with Dresdner Platz, the challenging construction work will also be carried out without disrupting traffic.

Another of the city of Chemnitz's major civil engineering projects this year is the continuation of the groundworkon Wittgensdorfer Straße: it is planned that the civil engineering work will continue from the beginning of April 2013 in the section from house number 35 to Leipziger Straße immediately after completion of the first construction phase (Wittgensdorfer Straße area from house number 35 to Bornaer Straße). The extensive expansion work will be completed by mid-2014. Construction work on the new Markersdorfer Straße bridge over the CVAG tram tracks is also scheduled to begin in April 2013 - as with all other civil engineering measures, detailed information on the start of construction will be provided in a press release. The construction of the new bridge will continue until mid-2014.Markersdorfer Straße itself is to be extended in the section from Max-Müller-Straße to Dittersdorfer Straße. This is associated with the media relocations required on site. The complex measure is also planned and realised as a multi-year construction project by the city's civil engineering department, together with the city's waste disposal company and the utility company eins energie.

Roadworks are being carried out in the Klaffenbach district of Chemnitz in Klaffenbacher Hauptstraße (section from house number 176 to 212). The work is being carried out here as part of the wastewater development programme by the city's waste disposal company and is being coordinated with the sewer construction. Hofer Straße in the section from house numbers 44 to 62 in the Mittelbach district of Chemnitz and Paul-Fischer-Weg in the Borna district are also being built. Last but not least, the start of construction for a roundabout at the Wolgograder Allee/Arno-Schreiter-Straße junction is on the schedule for civil engineering works in 2013.

The investment sum for the aforementioned new construction measures amounts to around four million euros.

The following measures are planned: Road surface repairs are to be realised in 2013 on Frankenberger Straße in the section from Am schnellen Markt to Max-Saupe-Straße, on Straße der Nationen in the section from Lohrstraße to Emilienstraße, on Chemnitzer Straße in the Grüna district in the section from Forststraße to Fabrikstraße and from the entrance to Neustädter Straße, on Pflockenstraße in the section of the construction end realised last year now up to house number 25, on Bernsdorfer Straße in the section from the railway crossing to Pappelstraßon Zwickauer Straße in the section from Ulmenstraße to the railway crossing and on Reichenhainer Straße in the section from Bernsbachplatz to Südbahnstraße.

There are also plans this year to upgrade the two stops at theIn the process, the kerbs in the bus stop area will be replaced and constructed with a kerb stop 18 cm high. In addition, the road surface in both bus stop areas will be repaired on site. It is also planned to repair the road surface on Leipziger Straße in the section from Wittgensdorfer Straße to Bürgerstraße. The realisation of this measure coincides with the construction project for the elevated tank, a measure of the utility company eins energie. Before the surface of Leipziger Straße can be repaired, excavation is necessary so that the connection to the pipeline in Leipziger Straße can be made.

Last but not least, bridge maintenance and hydraulic engineering measures are also planned for 2013: Another section of the bank retaining wall on Fabrikstrasse in the area of the Pfortensteg bridge over the Chemnitz River is to be renovated. A contribution from the civil engineering department's bridge maintenance/ hydraulic engineering budget is planned for the realisation of the work on the bank retaining wall; however, funding is also a necessary prerequisite for the realisation of the measure. On Feudelstraße, located in Altchemnitz on the Würschnitz, the civil engineering office has planned the necessary work for 2013 to secure the slope (at house number 52). An edge beam is to be erected to stabilise the road; the area has already been restricted to traffic for some time. The measure is to be realised over a construction period of approx. four months - detailed information will also be provided in a press release at the start of construction.

Around 392,000 euros are to be invested in the project on Fabrikstraße. 100,000 euros are planned for the repair of cycle paths in Chemnitz. For all other aforementioned civil engineering measures in 2013, including ongoing maintenance work on pavements as well as the repair of minor road damage, patching and smaller construction projects, approx. 2.8 million euros are available in the budget - as in previous years, 500,000 euros of this sum is planned for the repair of winter damage on Chemnitz roads.

The prerequisite for the realisation of the entire construction volume is the provision of funding. Preparations are currently underway to apply for the funding. Grant notifications can be issued once the budget has been approved.
