City supports sports club BSC Rapid in organising the 83rd German National Table Tennis Championships
High-performance Chemnitz sports club hosts the 2015 tournament - sports committee gives the "green light" for financial support from the city
The City of Chemnitz is supporting and sponsoring the organisation of the 83rd National German Table Tennis Championships for women and men by BSC Rapid Chemnitz e. V. At its meeting yesterday, the Culture and Sports Committee unanimously confirmed the administration's proposal (B-003/2014) and thus gave the green light in principle. 14,000 euros are to be made available for the tournament in the sports department's 2015 budget. The association expects financial support of 10,000 euros from the Free State of Bavaria for organising the championships.
By organising the most important national event in table tennis in 2015, BSC Rapid will bring the German table tennis elite to Chemnitz for the second time since 2007. These include medallists from the Olympic Games, World Championships and European Championships.
From the city's point of view, this major sporting event will promote an outstanding sporting highlight in Chemnitz in the coming year. The club's commitment will attract nationwide interest in table tennis in our city and bring visitors from many parts of Germany to Chemnitz. The sports club's committed project is also supported by the Chemnitz City Sports Association.
The championships will be held in the Chemnitz Arena from 6 to 8 March 2015. The Chemnitz club BSC Rapid, which is very strong in the Olympic sport of table tennis and has 108 members in its table tennis department as well as eleven teams in play, has applied to organise the tournament. Rapid's first women's team plays in the second national league. The club is also a talent support centre for table tennis for the state sports association and regularly organises major national and international tournaments.
In addition, the Free State of Saxony as a whole is a state interested in table tennis with over 18,000 active players. The tournament in Chemnitz will be attended by the best 48 men and women from the internationally successful German Table Tennis Association, who will be competing for a place at the European Championships. The organising club is expecting over 6,000 visitors on all three days of the competition and, last but not least, a great deal of media interest.
