City responds to increased risk of epidemics

Chemnitz hunters informed about new regulations following extension of the early warning system for African swine fever

The city of Chemnitz is responding to the increased risk of African swine fever (ASF). After the existing ASF early warning system was extended to the whole of Saxony by an amending decree issued by the State Directorate of Saxony on 2 November, the Lower Hunting Authority and the Food Monitoring and Veterinary Office of the City of Chemnitz consulted with each other. In addition, Chemnitz hunters were informed about the new regulations on the obligation to notify and cooperation of those authorised to hunt. An event organised by the two authorities and representatives of the Chemnitz hunting community is planned for December.

Following the positive discovery of wild boar infected with African swine fever in mid-October in the district of Meißen, more than 60 kilometres away from the previous positive findings in the district of Görlitz, new regulations came into force for all authorised hunters in Saxony, and therefore also in the city of Chemnitz, with the amendment to the general decree.

What is new is that in the previously ASF-free areas of the Free State, those authorised to hunt are obliged to have every wild boar they kill tested for the ASF virus without delay. The venison obtained may only be distributed after a negative test result has been presented.

In addition, as before, wild boar found dead (fallen and accidental game) must be reported immediately to the local food inspection and veterinary office. The taking of a sample and the recovery of the carcass will then be coordinated on an individual basis. The authorised hunters receive an expense allowance for the proper implementation of the requirements.
