City presents action plan for the sports forum
Joint responsibility of the city, federal and state governments
A plan of action for the future of the Chemnitz Sports Forum was presented today by Lord Mayor Barbara Ludwig together with Heiko Schinkitz, President of the City Sports Association, Head of the Sports Office Thomas Meyer and Thomas Weise, Head of the Chemnitz/Dresden Olympic Training Centre.
The city is thus presenting a proposal for securing and modernising the sports complex, some of which is in dire need of renovation. The paper aims to secure the performance centres and assumes that the city of Chemnitz, together with the federal and state governments, will assume responsibility for competitive and elite sport at the Sportforum.
Mayor Barbara Ludwig: "The Chemnitz Sportforum is home to federal and state centres of excellence. Top athletes train here to prepare for international competitions such as the Olympic Games. In its current state, the Sportforum does not fulfil the associated high demand for optimal training conditions. The action plan presented today lays the foundation for joint investment projects with the federal and state governments and is a commitment to competitive sport in Chemnitz. The city is ready to assume its responsibility. We now expect the federal and state governments to do the same."
Thomas Weise, Head of the Chemnitz/Dresden Olympic Training Centre: "The four federal training centres at the Sportforum have recently been very successful at international competitions. In order to secure these successes for the future, it is necessary to create proper training conditions."
Heiko Schinkitz, President of the Stadtsportbund: "With the prioritisation of measures, a realistic framework for action for the future of the Sportforum as a training facility for top-class sport is available for the first time."
The following objectives are being pursued with the action plan: The top priority is to maintain and restore the sports centre's suitability for competitive sport. Another goal is to secure and expand the federal and state training centres as well as the Chemnitz/Dresden Olympic Training Centre. This includes appropriate training conditions for users with a clear focus on competitive sport as well as talent development and work with young talent.
The modernisation of the sports complex focuses on the new construction of the gymnastics hall, the renovation of the cycling track as a training facility, the reconstruction of the main stadium and the House of Sport project with the Chemnitz/Dresden Olympic Training Centre.
Based on the Chemnitz 2020 sports development plan and the school network plan, considerable funds have been invested in the modernisation of school and club sports facilities in recent years. Since 2009, around 28 million euros have been invested and the conditions for school and popular sports in 32 sports facilities have been significantly improved.
The city of Chemnitz believes that the state and federal government share responsibility for the content and funding of the sports forum with the federal and state centres. For this reason, it has long been the city's aim to involve the federal and state governments in the investment activities in these sports facilities to a considerable extent. This corresponds to the responsibility and sharing of responsibility between the owner and user of the facilities.
