City population continues to grow in 2017
The population statistics for 2017 show 540 more residents in Chemnitz than in the previous year.
As at 31 December 2017, 247,422 people had their main residence in the city. 228,701 of them had German citizenship and 18,721 were foreigners.
The increase is mainly due to net migration. Significantly more people are coming to Chemnitz than are leaving. Looking at the inflows and outflows (excluding the initial reception centre of the Free State), the increase in migration was 1,586 and thus at the same level as in 2016 (1,527). A total of 12,633 people moved into the city last year (including 5846 foreigners), while 11,095 left (including 4047 foreigners).
Lord Mayor Barbara Ludwig: "The trend in population growth continued in 2017. The high number of new arrivals in particular shows that we are an attractive city to live and work in. At the same time, the number of births is increasing. Our impetus for urban development is having an impact. This growth gives rise to tasks that we want to master. These include, for example, more childcare places, the expansion of schools and the creation of living space."
The number of newborns in Chemnitz is 2,376, including 265 foreigners (as at
31 December 2017). Not all of the births registered at the Chemnitz registry office (3,677 children in total) are reflected in Chemnitz's population statistics, as children born in Chemnitz also live in other cities.
The number of deaths of Chemnitz citizens is 3,356 (as at 31 December 2017). Many of the cases notarised by the registry office (4,229 deaths in total) also do not involve Chemnitz citizens.
