City population continues to grow in 2016

Exactly 246,882 people lived in the city of Chemnitz as at 31 December 2016. Both including and excluding the refugees accommodated in initial reception centres (EAE), the city's population continued to grow.

In 2015, the city still had 248,878 inhabitants, which would correspond to an arithmetical decrease of 1,996 people compared to 2016. However, the reason for this decline is the high number of refugees registered in the initial reception centres (EAE) in 2015. At the end of 2015, the city of Chemnitz still had 3,408 refugees in the EAEs. On 31 December 2016, this figure was only 429.

If the number of people accommodated in EAEs is removed from the population statistics, there was an increase of 983 people in 2016. This growth is primarily due to a significant increase in the number of new arrivals. Last year, there were 12,081 new arrivals and 10,549 departures, which corresponds to an increase of 1,532 people.
