City of Chemnitz supports cultural institutions

At its meeting yesterday, the Culture Committee approved the funding of cultural institutions by the City of Chemnitz's cultural organisation. With this decision, more than 5% of the City of Chemnitz's cultural expenditure could be made available for the promotion of independent culture for the first time.

The prerequisite for this was increased allocations from the state on the basis of the current coalition agreement. On the one hand, the Saxon State Ministry for Science and the Arts has allocated the city of Chemnitz investment reinforcement funds totalling 266,600 euros for investments in the city's cultural facilities. Of this sum, two thirds of the allocated funds will be transferred to municipal institutions and businesses. These include the art collections, the municipal music school, the municipal library and the Chemnitz municipal theatres. The remaining third will be made available by the City of Chemnitz to independent organisations such as the Museum of Saxon Vehicles, the Tram Friends Association, Arthur e. V. and Radio T. e. V.

On the other hand, cultural institutions will be supported by an over-budget allocation from additional cultural area funds totalling 666,500 euros from the state government. Half of this amount will be allocated to the budget of Städtische Theater Chemnitz GmbH. A further 25,000 euros will be used for special measures by the city in the area of "anniversaries and thematic focuses". 308,894 euros are available for the promotion of independent theatre companies. Of this, 95,000 euros will go towards measures to develop and support the Saxon Railway Museum in preparation for the state exhibition. 20,000 each will go to the organisations Oscar e. V. and Das Ufer e. V., both of which are based in the Weltecho. In addition, a number of cultural organisations will be able to use the additional funds to carry out projects and special measures this year.
