City of Chemnitz sets up gymnasium as short-term emergency accommodation
The city of Chemnitz is currently setting up a gymnasium at Markersdorfer Straße 64 as temporary accommodation for refugees. This will create a reserve in the event that the Free State of Saxony distributes a larger number of refugees to Chemnitz at short notice than the 50 or so asylum seekers per week that have been arriving so far. This could be the case in the next few days, Mayor Barbara Ludwig announced yesterday.
The hall will be equipped with around 200 camp beds and will be used if the allocated refugees cannot be immediately accommodated in flats and existing shared accommodation. In particular, it is currently proving difficult to provide furnishings and equipment for additional flats. As soon as possible, the people will then be accommodated in regular municipal accommodation as provided for in the care and accommodation concept adopted by the city council. GGG and possibly other private landlords are currently preparing emergency flats for this purpose.
Unfortunately, club sports will not be possible there for the duration of the hall's occupancy. The city administration is informing the clubs today and asks for their understanding for this unavoidable emergency measure. As far as possible, the clubs will be provided with alternative locations for training.
As planned in the accommodation and care concept, residents and neighbours will be informed about the establishment of the accommodation: A residents' meeting will take place on Friday at 6 pm in the community centre of the Ev.-Luth. Dietrich-Bonhoeffer-Kirchgemeinde, Markersdorfer Straße 79, 09123 Chemnitz.
