City of Chemnitz receives funding decisions for road construction measures
The city of Chemnitz has received three funding decisions totalling around one million euros for municipal road construction. Mayor Barbara Ludwig accepted the funding decisions from State Minister Sven Morlok today. The city is receiving the funding for the construction of an additional right-turn lane on Hartmannsstraße, the construction of a roundabout at the Wolgograder Allee / Chemnitzer Straße junction and the construction of a new cycle path from Heinersdorfer Straße to Untere Hauptstraße as part of the Chemnitz Valley cycle path.
A 100 metre long turning lane will be built on Hartmannstraße and the existing pavement will also be redesigned. The separation of the existing straight-ahead/right-turn lane into two separate straight-ahead and right-turn lanes will increase the efficiency of the junction and is therefore also an important part of the public transport acceleration of bus route 21. The traffic lights will be adapted in connection with the public transport acceleration of Leipziger Straße. The total construction costs amount to approx. 220,000 euros, the construction period is approx. 3 months and is scheduled to begin in 2014.
The existing junction with traffic lights on Wolgograder Alle will be converted into a roundabout, making it the second roundabout on the road. The conversion to a roundabout is intended to make the flow of traffic on Wolgograder Allee smoother and safer, and the areas that are no longer required will be unsealed. The subsequent costs for a traffic light system can also be saved in the city's budget in future. The total construction costs amount to around 385,000 euros and the construction time is expected to be around four months.
The planned section of the Chemnitz Valley cycle path runs along Heinersdorfer Straße and Unterer Hauptstraße in Wittgensdorf and along the old Chemnitz-Wechselburg railway line, which has been rebuilt. The section is 1.7 kilometres long and runs through the "Chemnitz Valley" conservation area. The construction project includes two bridge structures and the total construction costs amount to around 980,000 euros. Construction is scheduled to begin in autumn 2014 and will take around one year.
