City of Chemnitz prepares accommodation for refugees from Ukraine
From next Monday, 14 March, refugees from Ukraine can be expected to arrive. The state directorate has announced this to the independent cities and districts. The city of Chemnitz is creating the initial capacity for this for an initial period of three weeks. After that, the need will be reassessed based on the actual number of refugees arriving.
The exact number of people arriving in Chemnitz from the state's initial reception centres from the beginning of the week is still unclear. The city of Chemnitz is initially preparing the Richard-Hartmann-Halle as accommodation for a maximum of 400 people, mostly women and children. The facility should be ready for use from Monday. Over the next few days, the hall will be equipped with camp beds and the associated sanitary facilities. By the end of the week, the sports hall of the Terra Nova Campus - Die Entdeckerschule will also be prepared to accommodate up to a further 200 people.
The aim is to move the new arrivals from these emergency shelters into flats as quickly as possible.
Based on the forecast that up to 1.7 million refugees from the war zone are expected to arrive in Germany in the coming weeks, around 5,000 people would have to be accommodated in Chemnitz for an indefinite period of time according to the distribution key.
The sports office will work with the users of the two halls to find solutions to move as much training and school sport as possible to alternative locations.
